LAUNTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Report to the Annual Parish Meeting, 24th April 2009
We continue with our regular meetings on a wide variety of topics that have an historical flavour. Our meetings are
well attended and we are looking to attract younger people.
Our meetings are open to all and we welcome visitors.
In particular this year we have enjoyed presentations on what our district would have been like from very early times
and through the Roman occupation.
On a more up to date note we had an interesting account of life in Marsh Gibbon in Victorian times and into the twentieth
century.
In November 2008 we were invited to display of some of our research at the Bicester History Day; others taking part included
the Oxfordshire Record Office, County Museum Service and other local heritage departments, plus special events organised by
Bicester History Society and Bicester Library.
As the event took place shortly before Armistice Day, we concentrated on the people of Launton who had served in
the two World Wars and we able to include items that had recently been donated to this Society.
The Day overall was well attended and some of our exhibits were of particular interest to visitors.
Interest in local history remains keen and teaches us that whatever our modern problems are life in the not too distant
past was hard and unforgiving.
