Despite the unpredictable weather, about 50 people of all ages
wandered along to Island Pond Wood in the late afternoon of Saturday 14th August, to help celebrate 10 years of “Woods
on Your Doorstep”.
All kinds of picnic food were brought along and shared with the beer, wine and soft
drinks provided thanks to a grant from the Woodland Trust.
Pat Tucker and Lesley Thompson set a tricky Quiz, the adult version being won by Ed and Angie Hamill and a team of
four girls winning the junior quiz.
The cake competition
was won by Lily and Jack, both aged 4, with a wonderful ladybird.
Most of the children had their faces painted
by Aileen Peverell and Penny Stephens and they all looked great.
Rob Cornford organised a wheelie bin race which was manic but fun.
Throughout the other activities Richard
Wakelin, with help from Richard and Tom Peverell, gave a fishing demonstration. This proved to be of great interest especially
when fish were caught.
As dusk fell, Stuart Hodges
arrived with a bat detector and Dave Wilton brought along his moth trap.
Unfortunately a torrential downpour meant
that neither the moths nor the bats were very active. The evening was then rounded off with a lantern walk around the
wood.
Everyone agreed that a good evening was had by all.
